History & Purpose
Becoming an International Peace Site
is quite exciting. Maintaining an International Peace Site
can be challenging. As a result of staff changes or lack of
time and energy, sometimes, Peace Sites disappear.
In 1998, World Citizen, Inc. conducted
a survey of Peace Site schools. The following needs were most
often mentioned:
- To keep Peace Site schools active beyond the initial
dedication ceremony
- To support teachers in creating and sustaining a culture
of peace and non-violence in their classrooms and buildings
The purpose of our Peace Education Program is the direct
result of our work with teachers who identified the following
as their needs as peace educators
- Create professional development opportunities to network
- Exchange ideas and resources
- Build a supportive community of educators who foster
a culture of peace in their classrooms and buildings
In 1999 our first session of elementary
educators gathered at The Historic Streetcar Station in Como
Park in St. Paul. From the ongoing evaluations and assessments,
we have received a clear message that what we offer is critically
needed and of value.
