About Peace Sites

 

What is a Peace Site? 

International Peace Sites commit to uphold the following five principles:

  • Seek peace within yourself and others
  • Be a responsible citizen of the world
  • Promote intercultural understanding and celebrate diversity
  • Reach out in service
  • Protect the environment

Peace Site Highlights

  • The first dedication of an International Peace Site in Minnesota was at Longfellow International Fine Arts Center, an elementary school in Minneapolis, on World Law Day, May 1988. As of Dec. 2001, there are currently 211 Peace Sites in Minnesota and over 750 in the world.
  • A few world famous Peace Sites include the Carter Presidential Center, the Club of Budapest Hungary and the Mall of America
  • The Peace Site Program flourished starting in Minneapolis, Bloomington, St. Paul, the Suburbs in the Twin Cities area, Out-state Minnesota, the U.S. and yes the world.
  • Many churches and church affiliated groups have adopted the Peace Site Program, i.e. : Baha’i', Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Unitarian / Universalist, and YMCAs to name a few. Also a number of synagogues have become Peace Sites. 
  • Many parks, nature centers have become Peace Sites. 
  • Several international Elderhostel Programs have adopted the Peace Site idea including : Australia, Denali Park - Alaska, Ecuador, University of Peace - Costa Rica, Vietnam
